The Essex Westford Educational Community Unified Union School District board met on November 1st, 2016, in the Essex High School library. Draft minutes are posted here. Highlights of the meeting include:
-Work on the policies of the new district is proceeding. The board voted to adopt the policy on Community Use of School Facilities. It also approved a first reading of policies including Drug and Alcohol Testing of Transportation Employees, Prevention of Employee Harassment, HIPPA Compliance, and Tobacco Prohibition. Full text of all these policies can be found appended to the minutes, linked above.
-The Engagement Planning Committee, which has been holding weekly meetings supported by the Nellie Mae grant and our partners from Everyday Democracy, wrapped up its initial work. The community members on the committee have identified four areas in which our community will particularly want to engage in the decision-making process: Vision, Student Voice, Learning Opportunities, and Transportation. Members of the committee will proceed to help form a steering committee to partner with the administration and successfully garner input from the community around these issues.
-Mark Andrews updated the board on the process for developing a transportation plan and budget. Members of the Vermont Department of Health who are conducting the Health Impact Assessment were present at the meeting. They are preparing a parent survey about transportation use and health impacts. Board members emphasized the importance of proceeding in a timely manner and effectively using the input gathered from the survey in transportation planning, as well as sharing the results with the community so that everyone understands where the transportation budget came from.
The second November meeting will occur on Tuesday, November 15th.
