The unified school board of Essex and Westford met on October 4th, 2016, in the Essex High School library. Draft minutes are posted here. Highlights of the meeting include:
-Randy Viens, Essex Tax Assessor, updated the board on the conversation about Common Levels of Appraisal in merged school districts that is occurring at the state level, and possible effects any changes could have on taxes in our communities.
-The board voted to approve the member slate for the Superintendent Search advisory committee, which will vet applicants for the position and recommend a final slate of candidates to the board. The board will conduct the final interviews and make the final decision.
-There was a long discussion about the proposed facilities use policy. In particular, board members considered whether it correctly represents the relationship we want to support with recreation and before-/after-school programs, and what sort of activities on school grounds are permitted, prohibited, or conditional on administrative approval. The board will consider a revised draft of the policy at the next meeting.
The second October meeting will occur on Monday, October 17th instead of the normal Tuesday meeting time, and will happen at Founders Memorial School in Essex Town.
